What is Language?

a few quotes and my definition

I really like this quote because it makes me think of a comedic piece by Paulien Cornelisse, a Dutch comedian, she talks about how one cave woman is fed up with her caveman’s behaviour and is unable to utter a word until she finds the tutting sound. Tutting is the universal sound for disapproval and the idea of that being the first uttered sound pleases me greatly.

This quote makes me think of the way we use idioms and how much fun language can be. These idioms are also unique to every language and are a sign that you can really use the language. This makes me think that the use of idioms is an indicator of language proficiency.

This speaks to our psychology: we feel superior because we can speak and reflect on ourselves. However, our reflections leave a lot to be desired and our speaking often gets us into trouble.

Language is an agreed upon form of communicating with others. A group of people have decided that these words have meaning and that the order of them expresses our ideas and feelings. Every community has its own language and new generations and cultures will keep coming up with new languages.

So long as people live language will remain.
